russell aka sigher the gutter snypes
producer of u.k rap outfit the gutter snypes
and a long time digger.
1. the royale vll "it's an explosion pt lI"windmill
intro start with heavy drums-bline kicks in and away you go!! even
room for a "hey jude" horn blast. pt1 is just as good
in it's own soulful way and still manages an 8 bar drum solo.
2. the firebirds "zip it up and throw it out" crow
if you threw this out of your collection, Frisbee it my way. by
far one of my best 45's two heavy chugging funk sides from the king
subsidiary. one credit is mcants--is that junior??? check it on
mr finewines archive.
3. starlighters featuring jorgie greene "i never thought"
durmen int.
is this rare, i couldn't give a toss--looks like it was recorded
in early '70s but has a superb northern r 'n'b feel circa '67 real
heavy bassline kicks it off---love it.
4. joe tex "i wanna be free" dial
damn never thought i would pay $90 for a joe tex 45. but i just
had to get this, it's irresistible message of how us men wanna be
free from are nagging wives!!!!---can you relate when you have just
brought too many 45's.
5. tommy cook and the fantastics "dance fever" priority
this was another blind buy at $3 and i first thought it was just
a general dance craze thang. comes from the harthon team of styles,
randolph but oh how i was wrong.--little strange organ licks accompanied
by rasping drumming---one to look out for in the clubs.
6. bobby bland "shoes" duke
again shouldnt be a rare record but they seem to be getting whipped
up right away. 100 club spin(i think) and you can tell why. the
story of a man who shoes just wont say goodbye to his women---brilliant.
7. del-rays "pure funk" phart!!!
buying a record on a label called phart do me a favour--but it's
real nice kind new orleans style groove out of florida--pure bass
drums and guitar.
8. edwin starr "running back and forth" gordy
found this on the war lp of my own accord--arent i clever, and thought
shit what an absolutely monstrous uptempo soul tune. now got the
45, which is different in the mix and i just cant leave it alone.
if youre checking us out edwin, rockkkk awwwnnnnnn!!!
9. styles of bobby day "your love" byrdland
as a producer the drums dont get much better than this. put it up
there in the all time greats and a wicked downtempo soul funk 45
as well from bob and earl man.
10. peices of eight "come back girl" a&m
brilliant showing of how us white fellas can hit a good soul tune
every now and then.--this is a brilliant northern doo-wop 45 from
around '68----

1. Trace Of Smoke "Treasure Mind"
If you don't like this, you're WRONG!
2. Brothers Gilmore "I Feel A Song"
Over most people's heads this one, but give it a chance it'll grow
on you....trust me;-)
3. Hamilton Movement "She's Gone"
Crossover soul doesn't get any better than this. It makes my girlfiend
horney as well, which is always nice!
4. Luther Davis "You Can Be A Star"
If there was ever a record that is deserving of some chart succes
this is it. the dancers love it, little kids love it, your mum will
love it, your gran'll love it, it must be the perfect record?
5. Rokk "Patience"
Best new discovery for over a year and still sounding very fresh.
6. Tickled Pink "Reach Out (And Give Me Your Hand)"
Intense, passionate, aggressive and fast. This never fails to fill
a dance floor. If you're into rare records you'll want to know there
are currently only 5 known copies in the collector's world.
7. Latin Breed "I Turn You On"
A bit of a classic these days thanks to Jazzman's Funk45 label.
The original's still super rare though;-)
8. El Anthoney "We've Been In LoveToo Long"
A bit too dark and moody for some, but I just love this kind of
northern'. My girl friend likes it too, it makes her spin around
in circles and punch the air.
9. Moorish Vanguard "Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love"
Produced by James Brown in 1977, but this is no disco record. Heavy,
heavy funk.
10. Larry Ellis "Funky Thing"

SOLID! Raleigh & Durham NC
1. Lyn Taitt - Stepping Up (Randys)
great JA funk 2-sider i'm diggin' this midtempo groover right now,
after about wearing out the mad moog flip.
2. Burgess Gardner & the Soul Crusaders - Do It (More Soul)
this rocking funk instro saved a record deal gone bad, beat-up and
missing records don't make me happy.
3. Dewey Terry - Do On My Feet (What I Did In The Street) (Tumbleweed)
i almost threw this one back when i played the flip side first,
"funky old town" ain't funky! but "do on my feet"
does it right with great hammond and guitar working it all out.
4. Bee Bee Butler - Sweet Sweet Life (SMC)
female funk perfection to my ears
5. Brass Monkey - Brass Monkey/Funky Monkey (Brass Monkey)
ok, so a dealer has an interesting record but it's priced a lot
higher than it' worth to you, so dealer comes down a lot with the
price and you decide to take it, but when you reach into your pocket
you are just about broke but the dealer still takes the small stack
of ones and coins that are even a lot less than his final price.
oh yeah, the record is just ok anyway.
6. John Phillip Soul and his Stone Marching Band - That Memphis
Thing (Pepper) i
was after this for the flip, but the few times i saw it on lists
and ebay i wasn't gonna bite at those prices. so i found it for
$3 buried in a box of 80s crap. i don't think i have played the
side that i was after more than a couple times, because this one
has me moving.
7. Joe and Everyday People - Sleep Walk (Brooks)
great song, but pressed waaaaay too quiet. i had a chance to buy
the alt. version "pimp walk" but it was up for
$$$
8. Hi-Fi White - Bulldog (Sandman)
i can't decide whether i like the vocal or insto side better on
this hard driving funky blues killer. bow wow!
9. Van Lee's Cruisers - My Goose is Picked (Vantone)
wonderful hammond proto-funk from Ohio.
10. Willie James - Stand Up For Your Rights (Unity)
hasn't left my playbox in six months. sounds like sped up J.B. from
69 with added conga/bongo really drivin'
it on.

1. Helen Troy - "I think i love you" Kapp
My favourite ever R&B 45, Uptempo, shouting vocals, stabbing
horns, total killer!
2. Merle Spears & The Treats - "I want to know" Whit
Perfect R&B/soul dancer, great when female vocal cuts in half
way through. Bought for a bargain $50.
3. Buddy Guy "I dig your wig" Chess
Superb harmonica driven Mod R&B dancer.Never fails to pack the
floor!
4. Ray Barretto "Hard Hands" Fania
Killer Latin dancer with excellent breaks, one of my fave latin
45's!
5. Dyna-Might "Borracho" Uni
Latin style funk with superb rolling bassline and drumbeats/breaks.
6. Irma Thomas "Don't mess with my man" Ron
Hard to find early R&B dancer, with great lyrics. Got this for
a bargain 10 bucks!
7. Betty Harris "Mean Man" Sansu
Another hard done to woman moaning about her nasty spouse.Makes
for an ace funky r&b dancer though!
8. Bill Doggett "Sapphire" b/w "Ko Ko" Roulette
Great hammond organ double sider, very underrated 45.

Groovy mod style hammond instro, has been seen at silly money.Guaranteed
floor filler!

Speed
Uptempo latin instro with great organ instead of vocals.Just as
good as Hippy Skippy Moon strut but loads cheaper!
11. Erma Franklin "I don't want know mama's boy" Epic
Awesome uptempo R&B dancer, surely one of her rarest and best
45's?
12. Billy Eckstine "I wonder why" Motown
Obscure R&B B-side that is brilliant because it sounds nothing
like Motown! Killer!
13. Albert Collins "Cookin' Catfish" 20th Century
Ace R&B instro that has great organ, brass and guitar, but is
far to short at less than 2 minutes!
14. Joe Bataan "Subway Joe" Fania
Classic Latin soul dancer that is getting very hard to find.
15. Ray Barretto "Together" b/w "New York Soul"
