mal c's top ten
"Soul On Wax" show, Eastside Radio 97.8 FM Friday 6-8pm going out to Sydney, Australia. Here the Current top ten in no particular order

1/ Onyx - You never fail to amaze me / YEW
Early 7'ts Crossover track that's got that certain something! very much like that Masterplan track they used to play
2/ The Contenders - Do What you Gotta Do / Edge
Classic Group Oldie, and IMO a top quality example of Mid sixties Soul Music.
3/ The Dapps - It will be sweeter tomorrow / King
Brilliant Very Early James Brown produced Male group sound !
4/ Gene Anderson & the Dynamic Pyscadelics - Baby I dig you / Royal Tone
Again a quality example of Mid sixties Soul Music also came out on Ambassador Records.
5/ Bobby Taylor - There are Roses Growing in the Ruins / Sunflower
Old Mecca spin that I never get bored off, also has a brill flip!!
6/ The Turks - The Bad Brought  the Good / DJO
Now now call it Crossover, but this has always been Northern collectable, Quality never goes out of fashion!!
7/ Ralph Graham -Ain't no Need / Sussex LP "Differently"
Top notch 7ts LP only track that is Semi Known, his best by far.
8/ Marvin Smith - Hold On / Brunswick
This just gets better every time I play it, Chicago perfection with a horn led break near the end that I always think of as that cities answer to the Motown sound, and it beats em hands Down!!
9/ Monique - Never let me Go / Maurci
More Chicago class, originally done by Tobi lark, but this is THE Version!!
10/ Marva Josie - Don't / United Artists
I've loved this for as long as I can remember hearing it, Classic 100 Club!!!

trouble's winter warmers.
1. Rufus Wood - Before 2001
Rare "northern soul" with a gritty funk which sounds so right on the deepfunk dance floors of 2004.
2. New World - We're Gunna Make It
A Curtis Mayfield production of the highest order. Imagine "Move On Up", but better.
3. Innersouls - Take Your Time
It ceratinly took alot of time to get a copy of this. Of the rarest of the rare, this is one of the best. Undeniable.
4. Earl English - Trying To Make Ends Meet
Better than that horrible Apache version. It's taken me 3 years to get this back after I sold my last copy.
5. Black Truth Band - Butter Nut pt2
A Deepfunk oldie, and it still hasn't been booted up. Noice:-D
6. Ree Flores - Look Into My Heart
The best funk record played on the "northern" scene. Forget the Little Willie Faulk version, for me this is the summit of dancefloor crossover soul.
7. Benny Harper - My Prayer
Very obscure uptempo funky crossover. It get's a few spins from the likes of Marco Santucci, but is yet to have it's day on the funk scene. Set to go massive...
8. Del Larks - Job Openning
This one (but thankfully not my mint black demo copy) has been hammered throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. And with good reason. One of the finest examples on the planet of a perfect soul record.
9. Orgone - Funky Nassau
Probably the best new recording in the past 12 months. An amazing female vocal over this version of the classic party starter. SPECIAL!!!
10. The Crow - Autumn Of Your Tomorrow
A Dave Godin discovery that was lent to Ian Levinne and played at the Mecca a couple of decades or so ago as "northern soul". It sounds like funk to me, and that weird change could make this a candidate for the first record ever made to have used a 'DJ' in the recording. At least I'm pretty sure it's a 'DJ', spinning a record backwards during the bridge. Certainly a very unique record, a piece of history and set for reactivation.

Beavers 2004 Top Ten
2004 bringing it up!! Beavers picks for crashing into the new year with a BANG!!

1. Pam Kellum "What You See You Can't Get" (A&B)
Best Sister Funk 45' I've heard in years, absolutely stunning.
2. David Robinson "I'm A Carpenter" (Orbintone)
Deep, Dirty, Raw, Hard as nails, New Orleans 'Eddie Bo' produced 100% genius Funk.
3. The Esquires Now "Have A Party" (Trinidad)
Rolling 'Stoned' mid tempo male vox funk genius outta Barbados.
4. Blue Rhythm Combo "Take That Funky Feeling" (Caravan)
More Barbadian Funkiness, Had it, Sold It, Heard it played @ DeepFunk & Had get it again (which I did). 'Dancefloor Pressure Gauranteed'.
5. Carlton Basco "Don't Chain My Soul" (Freedom)
'HARD' Male Vox Funk with vicious Drum breaks.
6. Margie Joseph "One More Chance" (Volt)
Stunning Crossover Femme Business, pulled this outta the box yesterday & f*ck me "What A Record". Pretty cheap to pick up as well.
7. Sir Guy & Speller Bros Band "Let Home Cross Your Mind" (D.P.G)
One of my all time favourite 45's. On many want's lists & (seems) really hard to pick up?. Oh so Soulful Male Vox over a raw Funk/Soul backing. Even the poor 'Ghetto' press can't take anything away from this 'Perfect' record.
8. Rhonda Davis "Can You Remember" (Duke)
Another slice of 'Sublime Crossover Femme Soul'. Would work perfectly on the 'Funk' scene. Rumoured to be appearing on Sisterfunk 2? (if we ever see it? Come on Wrighty!!)
9. Freddie Notes & The Rudies "Stratchin Chicken" (Duke)
Dirty Reggae Organ Business, sounds like a long lost Meters 45'.
10. Carl Henry Hall "Summertime" (Mercury)
Amazing Dancefloor Northern Version, with a Funky Rhythm. Payed $20 for this about 3 years ago after hearing it @ Lucas flat. Pushing £150 now, but apparently it commands that price for the inferior Northern Flip???
11. Leon Gardner "You Don't Care" (Igloo)
Low Down Dirty Blues Funk, with heavy hip hop beats.
12.Patti Jo "Ain't No Love Lost" (Scepter)
Curtis Mayfield produced Femme Soul perfection.
13. Patsy Gallant "It'll All Come Around" (Attic)
Only heard this about 6 months ago? Ultimate Feel Good record. Puts a smile on Marco The 'Spics' face (which isn't an easy thing to do, believe me!!)
14. Ray Frazier "Gonna Get Your Love" (Chess)
Still gets me every time, on a par with 'Am Somebody' for me.
15. Angela Jefferson "I Can Feel Myself" (M-I-C)
Killer Sister Funk. Nuff said!
16. Family Of Eve "Please Be Truthful" (BBE 12")
I absolutley Fuc*ing adore this sublime slice of classy Modern Soul. Desperatley need this on the original 45', can anyone help??
17. B.B. Brown "Low Down Dirty Tramp" (Dit Dot)
Label says '77, wax says "No Way". Dirty R&B style Funk with Heavy as you like Drum Break. Killer 45'.
18. Dorando "Didn't I" (Music City)
Heartbreaking Soul from a man blessed with a voice that's a cross between 'Curtis Mayfield & Al Green'. One for the early hours sessions
