Mr Scruff

Dubbed the Aussie Keb Darge, but then he may be the only funk collector in Oz of long standing, John has been an avid collector of hip hop and then funk 45's for a considerable time, and has a healthy perspective on what makes a good bunch of 45's. Always good for a trade or to buy a bunch of great cheap funk 45's, check my links section for a link to his site.

1. chuck chillout – hip hop on wax (vintertainment)

this is one of my first records I ever bought in 1984, I was 13, I loved this record and when I look back now I know why, its full of original funk and soul records cut up by a dj. love it!!

2. joe farrell – upon this rock (kudu)

between the years of 1984 and 1988 I was buying just hip hop,,not knowing that a lot of it was influenced by the jazz and funk of the 70’s…from 88 I was collecting a lot of jazz especially the kudu and cti labels, this one was the first on those labels that made my head spin around with joy aswell as the bob james records of course

3. de la soul – 3 feet high and rising lp (tommy boy)

woh, an lp that blew me away, I bought this when it came out and I could not get it off my 3 in 1 hi fi system, I am pretty sure I played this everyday for about 6 months, loved the vocals and the music and by that stage I knew it was made up of all samples from 60’s and 70’s funk/jazz and soul, the quest began to start collecting heavily on this type of music

4. james brown – black ceasar (polydor)

I actually saw the movie late night on tv before I could even find a copy of this soundtrack, I even taped the music off the tv for my own walkman listening pleasure, that’s how much I liked the soundtrack, had to get me one and paid the heavy price of $50 for it in 1992, my first contact to an overseas record dealer, thanks lenny

5. the honeydrippers – impeach the president (alaga)

its 1993 and picture it, I knew this had been used numerous amounts of time in hip hop, and the 45 keeped staring me in the face on the cover of a 45 king lp, I had to have it and @ 20 quid its mine, thanks mr manship

6. kool and the gang – give it up (delite)

well the 1st kool and the gang lp, one of my favorite lps of all time and when I heard this in 94 for the 1st time I had to have it, the track "give it up" still gives me goosebumps on my arm when I hear it to this day and always will I guess

7. earl english – tryin to make ends meet and leroy price – exotics thing

its 1997 and amongst 1000’s of 45s that I bought on my only trip to the U.S., these stick out as one of my favorite finds, oh the days of pre brainfreeze and the keb darge explosion…still trading with spares that I found on that trip

8. the bamboos – eel oil (bamboo shack)

well 6 months before this was released, band member lance told me he was going to release a funk 45, to my amusement I thought to myself, ok another group out of Australia trying to cut a so called funk tune ey?? So he hit me up with a promo at a night out, that night drunk in a stumble on the way home at 4am I put in on the deck in the loungeroom and fuck me it blew me away I kept flippin the sides and played each side 5 times, fuck me is this is good as i mumbled to sleep

9. xingu combo (irt)

as I am chilean I had to have this, THE funk lp from Chile - wow, I had to give up a lot of trades for this, but well worth it

10. my drum breaks and loop lps

so I’ve only put a couple lps out on my own label, still gonna make more though
